Enthusiastic Leaders Wanted!

Each summer, Akelaland is made possible through a staff of more than 30 paid employees.  To be a member of the paid staff at Akelaland, you must be at least 15.  Limited opportunities for paid employment are available every year at Akelaland, and most paid staff start as Counselors in Training before they are 15.  Background checks are required for all over 18 staff, and training is required, including first aid and CPR.  Most paid staff spend seven to nine weeks at camp for the summer.  Most staff are housed in tents within our staff site.

Paid staff must:

Be at least 15 years old

Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America

Serve at least 5 weeks during the summer (from Sunday morning through Friday evening)

Paid staff selection is a two stage process.  The camp management team will select individuals from those who apply to be interviewed for positions.  Interviews are pass/fail.  Information on those individuals who pass the interview process will be shared with area directors.  Area directors will work with the camp director to select the staff for their area.  Passing the interview is not a guarantee of employment.  Staff will be offered employment after they are chosen by a director.  Approximate timelines for staff hiring are:

August through December: Area Directors hired

December through May: interviews

April through June: Staff Hiring:

New Staff Members are provided with:

2 staff shirts, room & board, and a salary.  All staff must have a complete BSA uniform.  Starting weekly salary is $100/week for program staff.
