So What's new this year at Akelaland?

Quite a bit!!!

  • The mini week program has been revised based on the input of leaders throughout the summer.  The biggest three issues were Scouts whose parents were working could not pick them up on Wed. morning; Leaders felt you got a better deal coming at the end of the week; and finally having kids come in and out throughout the week disrupted programming (like getting a fire building class but no fire safety!).  We are hopefully improving our mini week by making it slightly longer (Sunday-Wednesday Night), and by adjusting our schedules to better accommodate mini-week Scouts.
  • There will no longer be a 2 week leader's meeting.  Instead two orientation meetings will be held prior to the start of camp.  Dates will be announced via this website.  It is vital that you try to have several leaders attend one of these meetings so your pack has the most up to date check in and program information.
  • The gate for camp will now be locked until 11:00 am on Sunday Mornings.  While in the past we have allowed units to begin moving in as early as they wanted, that sometimes caused problems when entire units moved in early.
  • Daytime programs have been revised to provide a wider range of activities for different age groups.  Now each group (Pioneer, Woodsmen, Pathfinders) has their own separate program area for Outdoor Skills, and each has its own much more distinct program.  This summer we will be using "Score Cards" to help leaders track advancement for kids at camp.  The Woodsmen program has been revised to include additional advancement opportunities, while the Pioneer Program is now an optional full week only program that is much more focused on transitioning to Boy Scouts.  It would be very helpful if packs brought at least three leaders so that it will be easier on you when the boys are split for instruction.
  • Each day a block of time will now be slated as open program.  We will have several choices of programs, and packs can also spend that time fishing or completing an activity as a pack.
  • Some prices have moved up due to additional costs on our part.  This includes picture and meal prices.  Pictures are now $6 for a 5x7 and $10 for an 8x10.  Meal costs are now $80 for a week, $50 for a mini week, $16 a day, or $8 for dinner and $6 for breakfast or lunch.
